Title

"Initiation" (two-hour pilot)

Airdate

January 27, 1993

Synopsis:

Peter and Caine are reunited after a fifteen-year separation, and Peter goes undercover in order to bring down a ruthless crime lord, who just happens to be the same man who was responsible for destroying the temple.

Paul's Scenes

Considering that this episode ran for two hours, Paul is really not in it that much.  He's in several scenes, but most of them are very brief.

Comments

My favorite Paul scene is probably the one with Peter that begins outside of the morgue and continues inside the building.  I like it because it shows how much Paul cares about his son and worries about his well-being.

I also like the scene in the mayor's office, particularly Paul's disgust with the mayor's desire for publicity.

Paul is shown driving a red Ford Crown Victoria in this episode.

His penchant for pulling his tie loose is established early on, as it is undone in most of the scenes in this episode.

Favorite Quote

Strenlich (to Paul, about his decision to send Peter undercover):  "On whose authority did you do that, Paul?"

Paul: "On my own damned authority."

Pet Peeves

It's a tie between the fact that the writer (Sloan) never showed Paul's reaction to Caine's reappearance in Peter's life, and Peter's line in the morgue where he tells Paul that he's not family.  Although I think the latter is a case of Peter speaking before thinking, which was his habit, rather than a true indication of his feelings.  It's obvious from the look on his face that he regretted what he said the minute he said it.  It's also obvious that the remark hurt Paul.

RL Factor

Good.  He looks very healthy in this episode.  He's just not in it enough, particularly when you consider how important it is since it establishes the framework for the series.
