Title:

"Secret Place"

Airdate:

April 7, 1993

Synopsis:

A deranged man with a bottle of nitroglycerin hijacks a school bus.

Paul's Scenes:

Paul's in a lot of scenes in this episode, including several with Caine.  They probably work together more closely in this episode than in any other, with the possible exception of "Retribution".

My two favorite scenes are 1) when Paul grabs the gun the S.W.A.T. officer is pointing at Caine and then tells the other two officers to back off, and 2) when Paul grabs Stiles' vest and tells him they're doing this Peter's way and then asks him if he understands.

Comments:

This episode was directed by William Shatner.  Yes, that William Shatner.  It marks the first appearance of Bartlett Stiles, the S.W.A.T. commander who betrays Paul in "Retribution".  Stiles is played by Richard Anderson (Oscar on the Six Million Dollar Man), who appeared with RL in several other acting projects.  Anderson is also the narrator of the opening sequence of each episode of KF:TLC.

Paul is driving a dark red Ford Taurus in this episode, the same car he uses in "Gang of Three".  He's wearing his badge on the outside of his suit jacket; it's attached to the left breast pocket, where a handkerchief normally goes.

This episode is a great example of how well RL expresses himself as an actor.  If you watch carefully, you can see a wide range of emotions on Paul's face.  You can see both his amusement and his disbelief when Officer Pierce, the cop who tried to convince Max to surrender at the beginning of the episode, is talking about the pros and cons of television comedies and dramas.  You can also see Paul's disgust when the press arrives, his anger at the S.W.A.T. members when they are holding a gun on Caine, his fury with Stiles, his fear when Max drops the bottle of nitro, and his relief when Caine catches it.  All of these subtle nuances are fascinating to watch.

It's interesting to note the difference between the way Paul reacts when Officer Pierce is shot at and the way Stiles reacts.  Paul's first concern is whether or not Pierce has been hit; Stiles' is to yell at him.

Favorite Quotes:

Paul (to Caine, after Caine has described the meaning of a secret place in his typical confusing fashion):  "Look, I am a cop.  Layman talk, okay?  I get lost in your metaphysical corridors."

* * * * *

Paul: "I've got an idea.  Maybe you're right.  Maybe I can get into your son's mind."

Caine: "You can.  He is your son also."

Pet Peeves:

The fact that Paul referred to Peter as Caine's son in the first place.

RL Factor:

Good.  He's in this episode more than most and he looks good.
