Young Dr. Malone (NBC, 1959)

Young Dr. Malone was a soap opera that ran on NBC from 1958 until 1963.  It was produced in New York, and the episodes were aired live.

According to an interview with Emily McLaughlin, who was Bob's wife at that time, the casting director wanted Bob "very badly" for the lead role.  However, he was reluctant to accept it because his career was really beginning to take off due to the success he'd had in Suddenly, Last Summer.

The producer, in hopes of trying to convince him to take the part, persuaded him to help with the auditions of some of the actors who were up for other roles.  He agreed to do that, and, in the process, got to read with Emily, who was up for the part of Dr. Eileen Seaton.

Emily won the role (after it was turned down by Geraldine Brooks when the show couldn't come to terms with her), and she stayed with the program for two years.

In 1959, Bob had a six-week stint on the show.  He played Peter Brooks, who just happened to be the psychotic, alcoholic ex-husband of Emily's character, Dr. Seaton.  Peter was shot and fatally wounded by Dr. Malone.
