Title:
"Golden Boy Had Nine Black Sheep"
Airdate:
September 18, 1964
Production Number:
#7303 (third episode produced; first episode aired)
Synopsis:
Joe Gallagher, a general's son, uses any excuse he can find to get out of
going on bombing runs. This infuriates Savage, who assigns him a crew of misfits dubbed "The Leper Colony".
Even though Gallagher has applied for a nice, safe desk job, Savage orders him to get the crew into flying shape.
Meanwhile, Wiley tells Frank the 918th has been assigned a dangerous mission over a heavily-guarded target.
Gallagher, who has whipped his crew into shape, volunteers for the mission - but only because it will look good
on his resume before he transfers out. Despite injuries to himself and most of the crew, Gallagher successfully completes
the bomb run with a crippled plane. He is promoted to major and receives a commendation from Wing, then tells Savage
that he has decided to give up the desk job and will stay with his crew.
Comments:
I'm sure most of you know that when RL left TOH, he was replaced by Paul Burke,
who played Major Joe Gallagher.
I got a kick out of Frank refusing to salute Gallagher.
I hated how Gallagher kept referring to Savage as "the General" when he was
talking to him.
I thought Joby Baker, Paul Comi, and Bruce Dern did a good job as
the Leper Colony, especially Dern.
Favorite Scene:
The second confrontation scene between Frank and Gallagher, the one where Gallagher
is shaving. Frank really lets him have it, and deservedly so. This is probably the angriest I have ever seen any of
RL's characters in anything, except maybe the scene where Control finds out Jason has his office bugged in The Equalizer.
He does anger so well.
Favorite Quotes:
Savage (to Gallagher): "On this base, every man goes to war every day
and that includes you!"
* * * * *
Wiley: "That's one of the more interesting facets of your personalilty,
Frank. Nobody ever has a mere meeting with you - it always has to be a collision."
* * * * *
Savage: "Gallagher, today you have made the worst enemy you will
ever have in your life - me!"
* * * * *
Savage (to Gallagher): "As far as I am concerned, you are a
disgrace to your country, to West Point, to the uniform I hate to share with you, to the 918th, and to your father!"
* * * * *
Savage: "Wiley, I have to pound each one of these men into shape.
I have to push them past all normal limits. I've got to; I don't have any choice."
* * * * *
Harvey (referring to the Leper Colony): "For days now they've
been at it from morning 'til night. I'd say Gallagher must really hate you, General."
Savage: "Yeah. Let's just hope he doesn't get over it too soon,
Harvey."
* * * * *
Gallagher: "The General requires a very special brand of savage tiger.
I'm sure I don't belong in your zoo, General."
* * * * *
Savage (to Gallagher): "Now, look, you don't hate me.
You never did. You hated the things inside yourself that didn't belong there."
