Comments:

I love this episode and I love this character.  RL did a fantastic job as Sam, and reprised the role two years later in another episode called "Reunion at Alcatraz".

I thought the relationship between Sam and Angel was very interesting.  RL and Anne Francis had a lot of chemistry, and that made their scenes together very believable.  Sam was obviously crazy about her, as was evidenced by the fact that he still carried the torch for her, even after thirty years apart.  And while she was obviously attracted to him, I wonder if her feelings ran as deep as his.  I think it's pretty clear that she cared about him, but I also think she was just using him to get the diamonds (something she admitted at the end of the episode).  And, what's more, it's also evident that he knew she was using him, but he just couldn't help being attracted to her.  When she decides not to go with him at the end, he tells her that he'll wait for her.  In the sequel, he apparently is still not over her because he's gone back to drinking and his life is a wreck, both professionally and personally.  However, he meets and falls in love with Rick and A.J.'s cousin Liza, and it's implied that he's going to get things turned around.  I always thought it would be interesting to see what happened if they had made a third episode where Angel came back and he had to choose between the two.  Hmm, I think I hear a fan fic begging to be written. LOL

When Rick and A.J. are going through Angel's apartment, they find a photo album containing an old picture that is supposedly of Sam and Angel.  I'm pretty positive it's really RL in the picture (and from the looks of it, it was taken in the early to mid-70s), but I can't tell if the woman is really Anne Francis.  I searched IMDb and couldn't find any shows they appeared in together, unless they did something on Broadway that I'm not aware of.  If anybody wants a look at it, I included a shot of it in the screen caps.

I've always wondered why they used another actress to play Toni Meyers, Sam's Girl Friday, in the follow-up episode.  According to IMDb, Joan Leslie, who played Toni in the first one, is still alive.  So unless she was sick or unavailable at the time, I don't know why they didn't use her again.  I don't really have a preference for one actress or the other, it's just one of those little things that make me curious.

At the end of the scene where Sam and Angel start to make love, the camera cuts to a shot of a train entering a tunnel, an obvious imitation of the very famous last scene between Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in North by Northwest, which Hitchcock later admitted in an interview was a phallic symbol.

Favorite Scene:

The one at the hotel room where Sam looks at himself in the mirror and throws the liquor bottle in the trash can.  Then, he grabs Angel, who is just coming out of the shower, and kisses her passionately.

Favorite Lines:

A.J. (to Rick): "He did it all and he did it first.  As far as I'm concerned, Sam Penny is the president of the (private investigators') faternity."

Sam (asking Angel about the diamonds): "So, when do I get to see these famous hot rocks?"

Angel (loosening his tie): "Oh, we can't get them tonight.  We'll do that tomorrow.  I have other plans for us tonight."

Sam (after telling Angel they need to go to Phoenix): "I'll book us on a late train."

Angel (looking at him lustfully): "How late?"

Sam (taking her in his arms): "Late enough."

Sam (about Toni, his loyal secretary, when he finds out she's followed him to Phoenix): "You let a girl answer your phone for thirty years, she thinks she runs your life, right?"

* * *

A.J. "Sam, keeping up with you is like getting a master's degree."

Rick: "You know, Sam, I hate to admit it - you're the best."

Pet Peeves:

None that I can think of.

RL Factor:

I love how he looks as Sam, right down to the hat and trenchcoat.  I especially like the rough, unshaven look in the first scene when he gets off the train in San Diego.

Trivia:

Anne Francis, who played Angel Barkley, starred in her own TV series during the 1965-66 season called Honey West.  According to IMDb, her most recent TV appearance was in an episode of Without a Trace in 2004.  She lives in Santa Barbara and was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2007.

Elisha Cook, who appeared with RL in an episode of Thriller in 1960, played Dutch Silver.

Don Grady, who played the computer expert, was one of Fred MacMurray's sons in My Three Sons.

Clete Roberts, who played the local reporter that Rick and A.J. talk to about the case, was a real-life pioneer in Los Angeles broadcast journalism.
